New Gibsons!
So, after seeing Jim’s article on the Gibson announcements at NAMM, I of course, being the Gibson Whore that I am, dropped all that boring work I was doing, and leapt like Tigger on speed, (Okay, I just opened a new browser window, but every fiber of my being was on fire when I did, so it was like leaping, but in a less Oh crap, John’s destroying the cubes again
kind of way) to the Gibson web site, and the page talking about the new models.
There’s a bunch of them, and I’ve not played any of them, (Hint to the nice folks at Gibson…you know, KC’s not that far away, and I’m good about returning review hardware, really. Or buying it.), this isn’t technically a review, but more of an impression.
- The Menace SG and Les Paul:
Mmm, I do likes me an all black guitar, and the brass knuckle inlay on the neck is a fun touch. Just going on the picture alone, I’d have to say that the SG is the better looking of this line, it’s got a more aggressive style that works well with less. The Les Paul looks good, but really seems to want a little more around the edges.
- The Goddess SG and Les Paul
I want to like the initial pics more, but i really need to see the other color schemes more. I think the Rose Burst is almost too “girly” for a Les Paul, and definitely too girly for an SG, although the Ice Burst finish works well for the SG’s more aggressive appearance. But making guitars for a smaller hand or body doesn’t suck, especially the Les Paul. SG’s have always been shockingly light for a guitar with such an ass-kicking sound, so weight’s not much of an issue there. I’d like to see the Goddess eventually migrate to more of a size option than a separate line, since, as Allison Robertson of The Donnas can demonstrate, chicks are perfectly able to play guitars that aren’t pink. (Note to Gibson: WHY DOESN’T ALLISON HAVE A SIGNATURE SERIES YET??? Sheesh, she plays with bigger balls than every emo band on the planet and TEN times the tone and melodic sensibility. She’s earned a $5,000 guitar with her name on it, and not a girly one either!)
- The New Century Les Paul Special, SG, Flying V, and X-plorer
I want to like this so much, but I just can’t. Maybe it’s just the pictures, and the angle or lighting, but there’s something about it that doesn’t look like an ebony guitar with a lot of chrome, but more like a quick ‘n’ dirty two – tone job. The SG looks especially off – kilter here. They all just look kind of washed out to me.
- The GT SG and Les Paul
This one is mixed. The Les Paul, at least the Candy Apple one, is kind of eh. I’d have gone far more obvious with the flames, although again, this could just be the picture. (If it is, guys, I know someone in Nashville who can make it beyooootiful for you, email me, we’ll talk) All I see is a red Les Paul, with faded flames, and some outlines. It’ll sound great, it’s a Les Paul, but the looks? Meh. Now the Candy Apple SG? DRROOOOOOOOOOL…IWANTIWANTIWANT. It’s ostentatious, it’s in your face, it looks like it’s moving fast just sitting there in the picture. It’s…glorious. Someone wants to make Johnny a happy boy, let me see one of these show up with my name on the title.
- The Les Paul Vixen
Um, it’s a minimalistic Les Paul. Two pickups. It appears to be yellow – ish. Not sure what else to say. It’s very…neutral.
- The Les Paul Studio Premium Plus
My first impression was
Wow, looks like a Boneyard, only darker
. Since that’s a complement, at least for the Rootbeer finish, I’ll stick with that. It’s a very…well, I see it and I think,this should only be played in dirty little blues clubs where the pure of heart fear to tread
. It looks like it’s already marked from years of beer, booze, and cigarette burns. It’s got character, and for a brand – new anything, that’s a neat trick to pull off. Good job guys. - The Les Paul Doublecut Pro
The Doublecut is an odd duck of a design. It’s not quite a “Les Paul”, (name not withstanding), it’s not quite an archtop, it’s not quite an SG, and it’s definitely not a Flying V or an Explorer. It’s sort of…none of them, and that makes it slippery. But it’s so reminiscent of many things, that it’s cool for that alone. But I’ll say that I don’t like the natural finish. That makes it look like the name on it should be “Ikea” instead of “Gibson”.
- The Vegas High Roller and Standard Semi-Hollowbodies
While I like the sounds from semi-hollowbody guitars, I’m not much of a fan of playing them. I will say, if you’re going to get one, go big, get the High Roller. It’s got more panache by far.
Again, I’m not even going to try to pass this off as a review of any of these guitars. I can’t possibly do that without playing them at least a little. Consider this a Gibson Whore’s first impression if you will, and you get a much more accurate idea of where I’m coming from.
As well, should the wonderful, witty, talented, artistic, and obviously wise folks at Gibson wish for me to write a proper review, I’ll be more than happy to provide mailing addresses to them. Really, it would be no trouble at all.
