An iPod ad that speaks to me

Wednesday, February 1st, 2006

I’m a big fan of Apple’s silhouette iPod ads—actually, I’m a big fan of the music used in TV ads, period. I often try to track down the music I hear in ads and end up either buying it from iTunes or, if left with no other option, pilfer it from a P2P file sharing service.

The iPod ads have unquestionably worked wonders for Apple, but let’s face it: They cater to an audience that prefers pop music, hip-hop and dance stuff. That’s fine and dandy—I love a lot of that stuff. But I don’t limit my musical tastes to it, and I really love jazz.

I frankly wouldn’t have expected to see jazz—even from someone like Wynton Marsalis—featured in an iTunes spot on TV. But I’m very glad to see Apple stretch a bit.

For what it’s worth, before the ad was even over, I was downloading the new iTunes exclusive content (“Sparks” and some other tracks) from the iTunes Music Store, so the ad worked.

Wynton just kicks ass! For Jazz, I always like Chet Baker—just an incredible feel for his instrument.
