Bruce Horn is still changing things

A few years ago, I was at the Apple WWDC, and a friend of mine, Dave Every walks up and says, “Hey, come over here and meet Bruce Horn”. Well, duh, of course I’m going to do that, Bruce is the man. I mean, he made the Finder and created so many concepts that still drive OS X.

Bruce, as it turns out, is also a genuinely nice, and funny guy. He likes to talk to people, and he likes to listen. He also likes to genuinely prod people to get up off their duffs and do stuff with their lives. So we’re talking and I’m kvetching about things, and how I always wanted to learn to play guitar, and finish college, and he says something along the lines of, “You know, you can always find reasons to not do stuff. You’re always going to be busy, or tired, or whatever. But you need to do these things, if nothing else, just to get them done. You should finish college, not because you need the degree, but because it’s hanging over you. You should learn the guitar, because it’s something you seem to really want to do.”

We had a few more conversations across that week, and they were always along the same lines. Bruce is a hell of a nice guy, and he managed to tell me these things in a way that really worked for me.

So here I am, and I can almost play “Misty Mountain Hop”, and I’m working my way through some other things.

Thanks Bruce, and it’s nice to be able to say that for more than just the Mac.
